You Ask — We Answer

COMMON QUESTIONS

WHAT IS YOUR NEW PATIENT PROCEDURE?

Your first appointment will take approximately 60-90 minutes.  Dr. Guild will go through an extensive health history with you and follow this with a thorough musculoskeletal and neurological exam depending on which areas of concern you have.  She will explain everything throughout the process, as she examines you.  Dr. Guild will follow up with a review of all your examination findings, and give suggestions on how you can help yourself (including exercises, stretches and home care), what options you have for treatments, whether or not chiropractic care can help you, and if you might need other forms of treatment.

WILL I NEED X-RAYS?

Dr. Guild will determine if x-rays are needed, after she has taken your health history and done an examination. This is always determined on an individual basis. If you have had prior x-rays or other diagnostic tests it's always helpful to bring those results with you.

WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?

A chiropractic adjustment is a gentle technique which mobilizes joints through their natural range of motion.  This is done with the hands or might be done with a multitude of other techniques, including ones that use special instruments such as the activator, integrator  or Thompson table. Dr. Guild uses a combination of techniques depending on what you require.

DOES A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT HURT?

Chiropractic adjustments should not be painful. Dr. Guild ensures that your experience will be as comfortable as possible with her expertise and experience, having adjusted thousands of patients over the years. Check out our Facebook and Google Reviews if you would like more feedback from Patients who have experienced chiropractic care.

IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE?

There are risks associated with any therapy, Dr. Guild will discuss any concerns you have about your care before treatment.

WHY DO PEOPLE SEE CHIROPRACTORS FOR YEARS?

Many people come in for wellness and preventative care.  Some come in for relief of chronic conditions, such as migraines, neck pain and repetitive motion injuries.  Some find that when they continue to have chiropractic check ups, they function better and are able to continue living their active lifestyles with less pain and discomfort.

WHAT IS THE CRACKING SOUND?

When you apply a small bit of force to a joint, like your knuckles, there is sometimes a sound that sounds like cracking or popping.  It is thought to be caused by the gases rapidly coming out allowing the joint to stretch a little further.  This gas increases the joint volume by 15 to 20 percent; it consists mostly (about 80 percent) of carbon dioxide. The joint cannot be cracked again until the gases have dissolved, which explains why you cannot crack the same knuckle repeatedly.  The joints around the vertabrae act very similarily.

Another source of popping and cracking sounds is the tendons and ligaments near the joint. Tendons must cross at least one joint in order to cause motion. But when a joint moves, the tendon’s position with respect to the joint is forced to change. It is not uncommon for a tendon to shift to a slightly different position, followed by a sudden snap as the tendon returns to its original location with respect to the joint.

WHY DO PREGNANT WOMEN SEE CHIROPRACTORS?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can provide benefits for women who are pregnant. Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

  • Maintaining a healthier pregnancy

  • Managing back pain due to weight gain or a shift in gravity

  • Controlling symptoms of nausea

  • Reducing the time of labour and delivery

  • Relieving back, neck or joint pain

  • Prevent a potential cesarean delivery

  • Turning a malpositioned baby to vertex presentation

WHY DO CHILDREN SEE CHIROPRACTORS? DO THEY HAVE BACK PAIN?

Yes some children do have back pain. However, many children see chiropractors for wellness care after falls, trauma during play and sports, to help improve their posture and to improve their overall health.
